City Bet Big on the Next Midfield Engine
Manchester City have confirmed the signing of Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille in a deal worth a fixed £81.3m plus £4.3m in add-ons, reported at around €100m ($117m) — a record fee for a teenage player in Premier League history.
The 18-year-old deep-lying midfielder has signed a five-year contract at the Etihad and arrives with City widely viewing him as the long-term successor to 2024 Ballon d’Or winner Rodri in the base of midfield. Bouaddi was one of the breakout performers of this summer’s World Cup for Morocco, and Lille held out for their valuation throughout the negotiations before agreeing to sell.
The move continues a busy summer of midfield reinforcement at the Etihad following the earlier addition of Elliot Anderson, underlining how seriously Pep Guardiola’s side are treating the succession plan in the deep-lying playmaker role.
A Statement of Intent
Spending record money on a player who has barely featured in a top-five league is a statement in itself — City clearly see enough in Bouaddi’s World Cup form and Ligue 1 output to fast-track him into a title-chasing squad.
It also signals City are not waiting for Rodri’s long-term future to be settled before building his succession plan, giving Guardiola a young, athletic option to rotate through the closing months of the season.
