A Four-Year Deal Sealed on Deadline Day
Arsenal have completed the £75m signing of Bruno Guimarães from Newcastle United, with the Brazilian midfielder putting pen to paper on a four-year contract with the option of a further year. The 28-year-old will wear the No. 39 shirt at the Emirates.
“I feel amazing. I’m glad for the opportunity,” Guimarães said on completing the move. “Since the first time I spoke to [Andrea] Berta and Mikel [Arteta], I was excited. I just felt inside of me that I need a new challenge in my life and I think to be an Arsenal player is going to be an exciting challenge in my life.”
Newcastle United CEO David Hopkinson acknowledged the difficulty of letting the midfielder go, describing Guimarães’ request to leave as “very emotional,” but confirmed the club would not stand in the way of a player chasing a new ambition after four years on Tyneside.
Rotation and Control for Arteta’s Midfield
Guimarães gives Arteta genuine depth and a new profile alongside Declan Rice and Martin Ødegaard, who shouldered a heavy share of Arsenal’s midfield minutes last season. With Rice managing ongoing hamstring issues, the extra cover is timely.
The timing could hardly be sharper: Guimarães arrives with Arsenal already missing centre-backs William Saliba and Jurrien Timber, meaning his physicality and ball-winning ability in front of the back line may be leaned on immediately.
