A Long-Awaited Homecoming
Geovany Quenda has completed his move to Chelsea from Sporting CP, arriving nearly 16 months after the two clubs originally agreed the transfer. Under the terms of that agreement, the 19-year-old winger spent last season on loan back at Sporting before completing his switch to Stamford Bridge this summer.
Reports on the exact fee vary slightly by source, with figures ranging from around £40m up to a package worth close to €52m depending on structure and add-ons. The move was part of a wider swoop on Sporting’s academy talent, with midfielder Dario Essugo joining in a related deal that took Chelsea’s combined outlay on the pair to close to €75m.
Quenda signs a long-term contract at Stamford Bridge running until 2034, underlining Chelsea’s continued strategy of tying down elite young talent to lengthy deals early in their careers.
Why Chelsea Moved So Early
Quenda was named Primeira Liga Young Player of the Season in 2025 after playing a key role in Sporting’s league and cup double, establishing himself as one of the most sought-after wide talents in Europe while still a teenager.
A left-footed right winger, his game is built around explosive acceleration and purposeful dribbling, with data placing his chance creation numbers in the top 5% of wingers in Portugal’s top flight last season. He has already drawn early stylistic comparisons to Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka.
