Five Different Scorers
A Comfortable Night in Trondheim
After a chastening pre-season opener against Championship Wrexham, Manchester United got their summer up and running with a routine 5-0 win over Rosenborg. Michael Carrick’s side had few problems against Norwegian opponents sitting just three points clear of the relegation zone in their domestic league.
United dominated from the outset. Patrick Dorgu clipped the post on 28 minutes, and three minutes later the breakthrough arrived: Joshua Zirkzee threaded a superb pass and teenager Shea Lacey swept it into the bottom-left corner. Yoro then rattled the crossbar with a header before the interval as the visitors pressed for a second.
It duly came 11 minutes after the restart, and it was a fine individual moment — Zirkzee wriggling away from a defender on the edge of the box before finishing calmly. From there the floodgates opened. Jacob Devaney bundled home from close range after Rosenborg failed to clear a corner, and Harry Amass turned in a low Jaydan Kamason delivery to make it four.
Kamason then turned provider again, picking out Ethan Williams at the far post to complete the scoring. It was an evening of encouraging cameos from United’s younger contingent — and a welcome confidence boost ahead of a sterner test to come.
Youngsters Stake Their Claim
With United’s senior World Cup contingent still filtering back, this was a night for the fringe and academy players to impress — and several did. Lacey’s composed finish and Zirkzee’s all-round display were the standouts, while Devaney, Amass, Williams and the creative Kamason all caught the eye.
Carrick will take heart from the sharpness in the final third after the Wrexham setback, even against limited opposition. The real gauge of progress arrives next.
United face Atletico Madrid on 1 August in a considerably tougher assignment — a proper marker of where this squad stands ahead of the new campaign.
