Three Days of Talks, One Firm No
Pep Guardiola has passed up the opportunity to become the next head coach of Italy, according to Sky in Italy, delivering his answer to the Italian Football Federation on Thursday evening. The reasons, it is reported, are personal ones that reach beyond football — a continuation of the family-first thinking that shaped his exit from Manchester City.
The FIGC did not lack ambition in its pursuit. Federation figures Paolo Maldini and his advisor Leonardo travelled to Barcelona and spent three days laying out their plan, reportedly prepared to stretch their budget to an exceptional degree to land the Catalan. What they offered was not merely a coaching post but a leadership role at the heart of a wholesale rebuild — an “Azzurro project” spanning the senior side and every national team beneath it, designed to restore Italian football after the humiliation of missing even the expanded World Cup this summer.
Guardiola is understood to have listened closely to the pitch before ultimately declining. It leaves the FIGC turning to a candidate who needs no introduction to the Italian public — and who, only weeks ago, was previewing the Champions League final for the cameras.
Pirlo Set to Come Home
With Guardiola out of the picture, Andrea Pirlo is now poised to take the job. The 2006 World Cup winner is reported to be ready to terminate his contract with United FC, a Dubai-based club in the United Arab Emirates, before finalising his agreement with the federation.
It would hand one of the country’s most revered footballers the chance to reboot his coaching career on the biggest domestic stage — a full-circle moment for a man whose playing genius defined an era of Azzurri success.
Carlo Ancelotti was also sounded out before Guardiola, according to Maldini, but remains tied to the Brazil national team — leaving Pirlo as the man on the verge.
A Federation in Crisis Mode
The vacancy exists because Gennaro Gattuso departed in April, unable to steer Italy to the North American World Cup — a third consecutive major tournament the Azzurri have failed to reach since their triumph at Euro 2020 under Roberto Mancini. For a nation of Italy’s pedigree, missing three straight finals has been a source of deep alarm.
The appointments of Maldini and Leonardo were themselves part of a sweeping restructure aimed at halting the decline. Their pursuit of Guardiola — and willingness to bend the budget to breaking point — underlined how seriously the federation views the task of rebuilding from the foundations up.
For Guardiola, meanwhile, this is the second high-profile international role he has walked away from. He is a free agent for the first time in a decade after closing out his ten-year Manchester City chapter, during which he collected 20 trophies and posted a win rate above 70 per cent.
Why Pep Stepped Back
“I need to step back. I will not coach for a while.”
— Guardiola, final Man City press conference
When he confirmed his City exit, Guardiola made his priorities plain: a break from the game, more time with his family and his father, and space to pursue things he had put on hold. He spoke of no longer being sure he would have the daily energy that title races demand — a candid admission from one of the sport’s great obsessives.
Notably, he has never ruled out international management as a future path, once suggesting that taking a national team — rather than starting over at another club — was the only kind of switch that appealed. This Italy approach, though, came too soon. It echoes 2024, when a reported verbal agreement to succeed Gareth Southgate as England boss ended with a change of heart and Thomas Tuchel — now contracted through Euro 2028 — eventually taking the role.
Could International Football Still Tempt Him?
Guardiola remains the single most coveted name in management, and history suggests his appetite rarely stays dormant for long. After leaving Barcelona he took a sabbatical, only to resurface at Bayern Munich; the itch, for a manager of his obsessive streak, tends to return.
That is precisely why the international game could one day represent the ideal compromise. It would spare him the daily grind of the training ground while still letting him drill his ideas into a squad across a tournament cycle — the balance of rest and obsession he keeps describing. Having conquered virtually everything in club football, the fresh challenge of the national arena may prove irresistible when the timing finally suits.
For now, though, the story belongs to Italy — and to a World Cup-winning midfielder who looks set to swap punditry and the Gulf for the toughest rebuild in Azzurri history.
