Hull City’s Fairytale Start Faces Its Biggest Test Yet

Newly-promoted Hull City are the surprise package of the season so far — unbeaten, third in the table, and yet to concede a single goal. Now they travel to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea in their toughest test yet.

EPL News · Matchweek 4, September 2026

The Numbers

A Perfect Defensive Record

Hull City sit third in the Premier League table with 7 points from three matches, the only club in the division yet to concede a goal this season. It’s the best start by a promoted side in years, and few pundits saw it coming after Hull were widely tipped to struggle back in the top flight.

The headline result was a 2-0 win over Manchester United on the opening weekend — United had over 71% possession that day but couldn’t find a way through. Hull followed that up with another result and, most recently, a battling 0-0 draw away at Aston Villa. Manager Sergej Jakirovic has built his side around a compact, disciplined defensive shape and quick transitions, a low-risk approach that has completely nullified bigger opponents so far.

The run has drawn comparisons to some of the best promoted-team starts in Premier League history, though Jakirovic himself has been quick to play down the hype, calling on his squad to keep working match by match rather than get carried away by the table.

The Next Test

A Trip to Stamford Bridge

Hull’s clean-sheet run faces its sternest examination yet in Matchweek 4, away at Chelsea, who have scored 8 goals in their first three games. History is heavily against the Tigers — they have never beaten Chelsea in 14 previous meetings — but their defensive record this season is unlike anything they’ve shown against Chelsea before.

Chelsea, for their part, have also conceded 7 goals already this season, so a well-organized Hull side will fancy their chances of causing further problems if they can replicate the compact shape that shut out Manchester United and Aston Villa.
