Klopp Takes the Germany Job
Jurgen Klopp is a head coach again. The German has been confirmed as his country’s new manager on a contract that runs to the end of the 2030 World Cup — his first job in the dugout since walking away from Liverpool in 2024, when he cited fatigue after nine years and a haul that included a Premier League title, the Champions League and the Club World Cup.
He inherits a national team at a low ebb. Germany’s exit to Paraguay in the round of 32 last month triggered Julian Nagelsmann’s resignation, and Klopp’s brief is nothing less than a full restoration through the next European Championship and World Cup cycle. He described the whirlwind of recent days as feeling almost like a movie, admitting the scale of leading his national side was only now truly sinking in — and that, after years of it feeling unimaginable, the timing finally felt right.
He brings familiar faces with him. Former Liverpool lieutenants Pep Lijnders and Peter Krawietz join his backroom staff, reuniting the trio behind the Anfield glory years, while Per Mertesacker steps in as the German Football Federation’s sporting director in January. Klopp arrives having served as Red Bull’s global head of soccer since late 2024.
His opening assignment carries a neat subplot: a September meeting with the Netherlands, captained by his old Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk.

Man Utd Name a 15-Year-Old for the Tour
Manchester United have offered supporters a glimpse of the future by naming 15-year-old forward JJ Gabriel in a senior squad for the first time, including him in Michael Carrick’s 25-man group for Friday’s pre-season friendly against Rosenborg in Trondheim. Striker Ethan Wheatley made way in the only change from the side beaten by Wrexham in Finland.
The hype is earned. Gabriel plundered 26 goals in 26 Under-18 Premier League appearances last season despite beginning the campaign at just 14 — the very reason he could not feature in the senior division, since a player cannot appear in the Premier League during the season in which they turn 15. He reached that milestone last October and will be eligible for top-flight action in 2026-27.
A history-making prize dangles in front of him. Should Gabriel appear in a competitive fixture before 25 October, he would surpass the late David Gaskell — a goalkeeper who debuted in 1956 aged 16 years and 19 days — as United’s youngest-ever player. Any pre-season minutes would strengthen that bid, though it underlines his youth that he has not yet even entered the two-year scholarship bridge between academy and senior football.
The Rest of the Briefing
Two Comebacks, One Theme
Both headlines are, at heart, about renewal. Germany turn to a proven serial winner to drag them out of a slump that has become genuinely alarming for a nation of their stature, betting that Klopp’s intensity and man-management can reignite a group short on confidence. It is a marquee appointment that instantly changes the mood around the national team.
At Old Trafford, the renewal is generational. Handing a 15-year-old a place on a senior tour is a statement of intent about United’s academy pipeline — and a reminder that, amid the noise around the first team, Carrington is still producing talent worth getting excited about. Whether Gabriel plays or not, his inclusion signals a pathway.
