🇧🇳 OFFICIAL CLUB PROFILE: HASSANAL BOLKIAH NATIONAL STADIUM

DPMM FC
Brunei’s club.

The most unusual club in Malaysian football. Brunei Darussalam’s only professional side spent a decade in Singapore’s top flight — winning it three times — before joining the Malaysia Super League for 2025/26 under a 2025–2028 agreement with FIFA approval. Seventh place in year one was a defensible debut.

A Unique Arrangement

Why a Brunei Club Plays in Malaysia

DPMM FC are Brunei Darussalam’s only professional football club, and Brunei’s domestic league is too small to sustain them competitively. The solution has always been to play abroad. From 2009 they competed in Singapore’s S.League — later the Singapore Premier League — and won the championship three times over that period.

In May and June 2025, the Malaysian Football League announced DPMM would join the Super League for the 2025–2028 seasons, following approval from FIFA for the club to participate in Malaysia’s professional competition. The announcement came in the same window as the MFL’s Financial Fair Play framework and an 80% salary-cap ratio.

The critical detail for anyone following the league or the betting markets: DPMM are ineligible for Malaysia’s AFC competition slots. Whatever position they finish, the continental places pass to the next eligible Malaysian club. That changes the incentive structure of their season entirely — DPMM play for prize money, development and pride rather than qualification.

It also means no relegation pressure and no promotion reward. DPMM are, in effect, a permanent guest — one that has to justify its place through competitiveness rather than results in a table that cannot reward them.

DPMM First-Team Core

DPMM’s squad is built around a core of Brunei internationals for whom the Malaysia Super League represents a substantial step up from anything domestic football can offer. Scottish coach Jamie McAllister leads a group that plays a direct, physical game and is capable of hurting anyone below sixth.

2025/26 Season Review

The Widest Spread in the League

No club in the 2025/26 Super League had a wider gap between its best and worst performances. DPMM beat Imigresen 4–2, PDRM 3–1 and Penang 2–0 at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium, and drew with Melaka and Negeri Sembilan.

They also lost 10–0 at Johor Darul Ta’zim on 25 October 2025 — the biggest home win of the entire season and the heaviest defeat inflicted on anyone. They were beaten 5–0 at home by Terengganu, and lost 2–5 at home to Selangor in a match where Chrigor scored four.

Twenty-one goals scored and forty conceded across sixteen matches is the profile of a team that can compete with the bottom half and cannot live with the top four. Seventh place — five wins, three draws, eight defeats — was a fair reflection.

Off the pitch, the numbers were harder. The season’s lowest recorded attendance came in DPMM’s 2–2 draw at PDRM on 9 August 2025, watched by 220 people — a reminder that away support does not travel across an international border on a Saturday.

The Only International Away Trip

DPMM play at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium in Bandar Seri Begawan, capacity 28,000 — Brunei’s national ground and the only venue in the Malaysia Super League that requires opponents to cross an international border.

That creates a logistical burden for visiting clubs that DPMM should be exploiting harder. Their home record in 2025/26 was genuinely respectable — wins over Imigresen, PDRM and Penang — but the two heavy home defeats to Terengganu and Selangor undid much of the advantage.

Commercially the club sits in an unusual position: backed by Royal Brunei Airlines and DST, with a Puma kit deal, but drawing from a national population smaller than most Malaysian states. Revenue and squad depth are structurally capped.

For Brunei football overall, the arrangement is transformative. The national team’s player pool now gets regular competitive football at a level well above anything the domestic league provides.

2026/27 Outlook: Year Two Is the Test

Year two is where invited clubs either consolidate or get found out. The novelty is gone, opponents have a full season of video on DPMM, and there is no promotion or continental carrot to chase.

The 12-team Super League should help. Fewer fixtures means a lighter travel burden for a club whose every away match involves an international flight, and PDRM’s withdrawal removes one of the two Teams DPMM comfortably beat — but also removes a fixture in which they conceded points on the road.

Realistically, DPMM’s target is to repeat seventh while narrowing the goal difference. Cutting forty conceded down to the high twenties would represent genuine progress even with the same league position, and would signal that the 2025–2028 agreement is delivering what Brunei football needs from it.
