East Coast Silverware
Terengganu’s honours are concentrated in two golden periods — the early 2000s and the 2011 Malaysia Cup run. What the cabinet does not show is the consistency of support that has never dipped in between.
Honours reflect the Terengganu football lineage across its FA and club structures. The club’s most recent major domestic trophy predates the current Johor Darul Ta’zim dynasty.
Terengganu First-Team Core
Terengganu carry genuine Malaysian international depth and a pair of imports who both reached six league goals in 2025/26 — a balance most mid-table clubs would take. What the squad has lacked is a coach in place long enough to impose a shape on it.

Penyu
The turtle badge is a direct reference to Terengganu’s coastline and its leatherback nesting grounds. Few Malaysian clubs are as visually and culturally rooted in their state.
The Christmas Sacking
Appointed in June, sacked on 25 December. Terengganu have the budget of a top-four club and the managerial turnover of a relegation candidate.
Two Strikers, No System
Careca and Yann Mabella both hit six league goals. Terengganu scored 29 in sixteen — more than fourth-placed KL City. They also conceded 24.
Fast Start, Long Plateau
Terengganu were fourth after matchday one and second after matchday two. It was the highest they would climb. A 5–2 defeat at Selangor in August — Chrigor’s hat-trick — set the tone for a season in which the Turtles could beat anyone below them and could not live with anyone above.
The home form at Kuala Nerus carried them: 4–1 over Kelantan, 4–0 over Melaka, 1–0 over DPMM, and creditable draws with Kuching City and Selangor. Away they won 5–0 at DPMM and 3–2 at Star City. Against Johor Darul Ta’zim they were beaten 0–5 at home.
The attack was legitimately good. Twenty-nine goals in sixteen matches, with Careca and Yann Mabella both on six and a spread of contributors behind them. The defence was not: twenty-four conceded, and only three clean sheets for Suhaimi Husin by the midpoint of the season.
Badrul Afzan was dismissed on Christmas Day with the side fifth. Tengku Hazman took over and finished the campaign in exactly the same position. That is the most damning statistic of Terengganu’s season: changing the coach changed nothing.
Players to Watch in 2026/27
Careca
The Brazilian shared Terengganu’s scoring lead with six league goals and was a consistent presence in the top-ten charts alongside players from clubs with far bigger budgets.
Yann Mabella
Six league goals in a debut-standard campaign. Having two forwards on the same tally is unusual in Malaysian football and gives Terengganu a genuine tactical choice up front.
Shahrul Nizam
Through three coaching changes, the captain has been the continuity. In a squad that has been reorganised repeatedly, his role as the dressing-room anchor matters more than his statistics.
Suhaimi Husin
Three clean sheets by the midpoint of 2025/26 placed him fourth in the league standings. Improving that number is the single clearest route to Terengganu moving up the table.
Fifty Thousand Seats
The Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Stadium in Kuala Nerus is the largest club venue in Malaysia — 10,000 seats bigger than Johor Darul Ta’zim’s Sultan Ibrahim Stadium and nearly five times the size of Selangor’s MBPJ.
Terengganu supporters travel in numbers that embarrass clubs with much larger city populations, and the east-coast trip is a genuinely difficult one for peninsular opponents — a long drive, a hostile crowd and a pitch that rewards physical football.
The commercial upside of that venue is enormous and largely unrealised. Filling it consistently would transform the club’s revenue base without a single new sponsor.
The East Coast Derby
The fixture that matters most on the east coast is Terengganu versus Kelantan. With Kelantan Red Warrior promoted for 2026/27, that derby returns to the Super League after a season of disruption — and it is the most emotionally charged match in the northern half of the peninsula.
Terengganu won the 2025/26 meeting 4–1 at home. In a 12-team league they will play the reconstituted Kelantan side twice, and both fixtures will sell.
Beyond that, trips to Johor and Selangor remain the season’s benchmark occasions — the two clubs Terengganu measure themselves against and have not beaten with any regularity in over a decade.
Appoint, Then Leave Alone
The single most valuable decision Terengganu can make in 2026/27 has nothing to do with the transfer market: appoint a head coach and give him two full seasons. The two clubs that finished above them and outside the top two — Kuching City and Kuala Lumpur City — were the only two that did not change manager mid-season.
The playing resources are there. Terengganu outscored fourth-placed KL City in 2025/26. Fixing a defence that shipped 24 in sixteen matches is a coaching problem, not a recruitment one.
In a 12-team league, the return of the Kelantan derby and the shorter fixture list both favour a club with Terengganu’s home advantage. Third place and an ACL2 challenge is realistic. Another fifth would be a waste of the biggest stadium in the country.
